If you dont really need to be able to read the language, then I would say you should just ignore number (5) above. And at (4), skip the Mandarin subtitles.

1. First, decide which Chinese language or dialect you want to learn. I assume you mean the Mandarin language, which is the one spoken by most people in the Peoples Republic of China.

Basically were working on a smartphone app that will help you to learn and actually remember (long-term) Chinese characters. Some of you might be familiar with the approach. We give a fixed meaning to every character and character component and make up short stories (mnemonics) from those meanings to help you remember the character.

4. Watch TV shows and movies in Mandarin with subtitles in Bengali or English. Try to listen to what they are saying and compare it to what you are reading. Gradually you will recognise more and more words. When you get very good, change the subtitles to Mandarin (you can do this with a lot of DVDs – they have subtitles in the same language for deaf people). That can be easier than listening with no subtitles at all, because sometimes actors mumble or talk too fast. With subtitles, you are learning the written and spoken language at the same time. Eventually, turn off the subtitles.
